Working Life of Earnings Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Analysis Reveals

Per fresh research, the median employee in the UK would need over five decades of salary to achieve the financial standing of the wealthiest 10% of the population.

Growing Economic Disparity Across Decades

This research analyzed wealth distribution information including the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that back in the mid-2000s, it would have needed 38 years' worth of typical employment income to join the richest segment of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist part of the report observed: "Financial divides in Britain are now so large that a regular employee setting aside their entire income throughout their career would still not be able to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."

Quantifying the Economic Gap

The analysis found that the gap between the net worth of the median citizen and someone in the top 10% was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had increased to £1.3 million in real terms by the pandemic years.

The researcher added: "These disparities are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is limited – people that start life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and conversely applies."

Comparative Financial Divide

Even with the financial disparity growing in absolute terms, the share of total wealth in the UK held by the wealthiest families – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," according to the research.

Throughout these years, overall assets in the UK surged from triple the gross domestic product, to approximately 7.5x.

Contributors of Financial Divide

Termed "passive" gains, through increasing property values and changes in pension valuations, were the main drivers of the expanding economic divide since 2010, per the report.

These gains generally flowed to older, property-owning households, the study demonstrates – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Generational Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s increased over twofold in actual value, from £135,000 in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Area-Based Disparities

Additionally, there were stark regional variations, with the median value of net worth in recent years amounting to £290,000 in the southeastern region, where property prices have generally grown substantially, as opposed to £110k in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Effects

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were covered under the public-funded employment protection, and pandemic lockdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the statistics indicate countless homes were able to save, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, nevertheless. "The typical family in the lowest-income quintile saw their cash reserves rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the pre-crisis period. In contrast, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
