An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to recent findings.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Online
Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting customers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an investigational injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Worries
However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users injecting products of uncertain source.
Some professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing price of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Enforcement
Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Content Elimination
According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Research also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of users, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.
After minutes of joining one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.
Product Details and Costs
Inside these communities, messages display black plastic packages with postal service labels, stating to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between powder vials, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Security Measures
A representative for Telegram said it actively monitored harmful material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using social media. But fake treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has previously seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially serious health risks”.
