One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will produce two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
